Creatine
BCAAs
Fish Oil
Whey Protein
What are your favorite supplements lads?
Creatine
BCAAs
Fish Oil
Whey Protein
Creatine used to be a favourite but I became worried about potential liver trouble (don't know why) and it bloats out the face.
Whey Protein - they've got this stuff tasting alomst exactly like milk shake nowadays... a long way from the old Joe Weider products![]()
LHF,
Studies show that very few people experience bloating with creatine. It was a rumor (much like kidney or liver toxicity) and it may have been phsychosomatic resulting from placebo-effect.
However, if you truly are one of those cases, use a creatine ethyl ester (i think cellmass is one). For the vast majority, this is a worthless extra expense...but it will help if you bloat.
As for liver/kidney trouble. I wouldn't worry too much. Creatine is one of VERY few supplements actually studied in humans. (Many supplements boast claims based on derived data from experiments in rodents). Five year studies show no harmful effects. Animal studies showed no further harmful effect in rats that already had kidney disfunction. Even high protein intake studies have conflicting results in this matter (creatine may be safer than protien)
Hell, creatine is now being used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including a form of muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig's disease.
There are also positive effects of creatine on glucose tolerance
and homocysteine levels.
Creatine and protein.
I'm a monster!!!

Whey protein and HotRox.
Seems to work well for me.
i just threw out a huge tub of whey protein powder. I've had it in my pantry for years. No matter how much I blend it there are always clumps of powder in my shake. Tastes awful. I've tried adding a bunch of stuff to it like fruits, veggie/herbal powders, traces of omega fish oils, etc... that stuff made it taste a bit better but it still was pretty bad. Nowdays I just stick to a good old well balanced diet. I try to do Gluten free as much as possible, antiinflammatory foods, high fiber, flax seeds, quinoa, buckwheat, etc
Monster DROL i believe by Vita Sport.
I've been taking NO2 black with my brother when I work out with him. Damn! That is the only sup I ever took that you can notice a change in your strength and endurance!
I dont work out much anymore.
I dont take anything at all anymore.
If I do take anything its a protein bar. I like the cell tech bars/meso tech bars (are they still called this?). I love the peanut butter flavor.
If I were serious again, Id probably only rely on proper nutrition and protein bars.
Im just not into the buff thing anymore. I just try to remain relatively lean.
I lost most of my muscle. My arms used to be 17 inches (one was 17 the other was 16 3/4 or so). Now Id be lucky to have 15's.![]()
Are you confusing the fact that creatinine clearance is used to measure kidney function with the idea that creatINE is somehow damaging to the kidneys? thats not really how it works...
i will explain it simplistically but you can look into it further if you really want to learn:
as muscle tissue breaks down, creatinine is created as a metabolite of creatine...in most people, creatinine is created at a fairly consistent rate...it is then eliminated via the kidneys...because it is SO consistent and easy to measure, it is used as a gauge of kidney function. Now...theoretically, by supplementing creatINE, some could be converted to creatinine...thus your level of creatinine may go up slightly (but note: someone with more muscle mass than typical will also have elevated creatinine). Its just a marker...not a causation type of situation.
any chemical eliminated by the kidneys theoretically could be used...creatinine is just easy because its fairly constant.
as I mentioned before creatine is one of very FEW supplements studied in Humans.
As for what it does to your face...maybe you are just ugly...just a thought.

Nice ownage BJ.
Personally, creatine has always been good to me. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about my experience with andro 7 years ago.
I tried Andro back in the day...no results...years later i found out it was the real deal and i was like WTF???
I had friends though that got acne as a result...whats funny is my friends getting acne is what got me excited to try it. "cool, it must be some good shit"![]()

haha
your educating me on creatinine clearance? hahaha how about glomerular filtration rate?
Psst. Im an RN and Im in grad school to become a nurse practitioner. I think I know the difference between creatine and creatinine. lol
AND you know this, I remember you trying to educate me on regular insulin half life or something of that nature.
When your kidneys are on overdrive for something else, as are my kidneys are, taking creatine is not advised.
Are you diabetic?
are you asking for an education on GFR?
i'd be glad to help...what questions do you have?
for a tip though, nephron.com will calculate GFR if you need it and your lab does not provide it. I know a lot of nurses that just keep it bookmarked. Its free...no registration, etc
no i am not diabetic...you? (but its my business to have in depth knowledge of the disease)
your statement was that creatine is potentially destructive...not that YOU had a particular problem associated with creatine (though that sounds iffy as I have not heard of any precautions...seriously are you diabetic? There are current studies looking at creatine and glucose tolerance that you may be interested in).
and i think i was educating you on the role incretin hormones GLP-1 and GIP have in stimulating the release of insulin and halting the production of glucagon...i educate RNs and MDs on this stuff everyday so don't feel bad
the fact that you made the kidney/creatine statement with your background makes a lot of sense actually...you have just enough knowledge to know about creatine, creatinine and renal function, but have not bothered to look into it...thats how this whole misconception was started...a person with no background would never have even considered renal function...
Finally, my explanation was not just directed at YOU but rather to help anyone reading...there IS a misconception re: Creatine/Kidneys...a person without the background may be led to believe it is a real problem due to creatinine confusion.
Also, if you are continuing your education, you might consider opening up to learning new things from other people...people far smarter than you need new information everyday...new clinical data that was not available when they were in school...when you are an NP (and even now) you may not have time to keep up with every journal to pour over new studies...you CAN learn from other people... just as certainly as there are MANY areas you could educate me on I'm sure. Even if your textbooks were printed 6 months ago, there is STILL new data that you may not have. So in all sincerity, if you have any Qs regarding any new studies involving treatment of diabetes, lipids, etc...I may be able to help.

Any updates on your favorite supplements?
I haven't taken creatine in about 3-4 months because it was causing me to break out a lot on my back.
I'm now looking into incorporating another supplement, but haven't decided on which one to go with. Right now I'm just eating a ton of meat, fish, eggs, etc... It's one of those high protein/low carb diets with a cheat day in there every two weeks or so.
I just got done taking a cycle of the CREAKIC, LEUKIC, and GAKIC from Muscletech. They are all pills and i liked the results i got. Especially the way the GAKIC made me feel in the gym. Be careful cause it's pretty potent.
I have the creatine from Muscletech but it makes me naushis so i take it every once in a while. I'm giving my body a rest for about a month with the supplements. Even though i'm considering a fat burner to hep speed up losing the beer belly.
REBEL, where are you at in your work out goals? Did you beef up like you wanted?
Still just NOS, creatine and whey protien.
I broke 18" on the biceps, I am now going for 20"!! Back to a 30" waist as well.
My abs are also ripped. You have to do weights with your abs to get those deep grooves for your six-pack!
