Thread: The best left hook to the body of all-time

  1. #1

    Thumbs up

I think Chavez wins this award hands down. Was there ever a better left hook to the body? It was a thing of beauty. He'd throw it on a consistent basis. Not many fighters do that these days. If I were a trainer teaching my fighter the art of body punching, I'd pop in a tape of prime Chavez.

Gotta mention Ward, not for all-time, but for recent time, definitely.

MAB can crack that punch too

Ward had a great left hook but he didn't throw it as often as Chavez. Chavez threw it as often as Larry Holmes jabbed.

I'll go with Chavez. One thing that always makes me laugh whenever I watch the last round of the first Chavez/Taylor fight, is that when Chavez hurts Taylor with the right hand and he stumbles to the corner, Chavez closes in on him.....and goes to the body a little bit before decking Taylor.

I hear you, yet as a fairly "new" fan of boxing (3-4 yrs), I haven't seen enough of Chavez' fights in regularity....

But, if you're telling me he'd throw 20-30 some hooks to the body (if not more) per round.... I'd say that I haven't seen any fighter like that.

I don't know about 20-30 but he'd often throw about 15-20 left hooks per round. That's just left hooks to the body. You don't see that these days.

thats a good point..Chaves made a habit of throwing it...but you know I think Ward has to be one of the dumbest fighters of all time...he never thew the hook to the body enough...but when he did..you would always see his opponent get bothered by it..one way or another

Yeah that was Ward's money punch. He probably didn't throw it as often because he was slow and his chin wasn't as sturdy. Throwing it too often meant getting countered more often.

but let me show you how dumb Ward is

he was a punching bag against sanchez for like 7 rounds..shit ward didnt even throw a punch..then he throws one bodyshot and its over..LOL..like why didnt he throw one before

then against Burton..he drops him and has him badly hurt in their fight..right before the bell..then he goes out the next round and headhunts

STUPID...ward was one the dumbest fighters out there..nice guy but DUMB

Effectiveness wise: Chavez & Mike McCallum.

Powerwise: Gerald McCllelan. G-man stopped more people with body shots than any fighter I've seen. RJ also has a very powerful body left hook.

He threw the left hook often against Antonio Diaz and I was surprised Diaz didn't fold.

Also when Ward had Gatti all but OUT in the 9th round, he head-hunted and allowed Gatti to recover. Then he goes back to the body late in the round and Arturo is ONCE AGAIN almost out. Then the next round Ward does nothing.

I agree with Croc. Ward wasn't blessed with much of a boxing brain.

ha ha..this is so true..did you see arturo literally give his face to ward to pummel after he got hurt by the bodyshot...gatti getting punched in the face was the best thing that could have happened to him in that round

Derrick Jefferson had heart too, but he's still a bum! Ward was a career journeymen, who elevated himself to FRINGE contender status late in his carrer. He was still a mediocre fighter. Who cares if he has more heart than Judah? Zab still shut him out! What, we should reward Mickey for being good at taking ass whoopings? Sorry dumbass, but the HOF is reserved for great FIGHTERS, not club fighters with great heart.

Watch him say Pryor. :D Aaron would have beaten Ward within an inch of his life! Even if he snorted all the coke in the world, Ward would still suck.

I think gregg has a point, but if Ward deserves to be inducted so does Antonio Diaz.

chavez probably has to take the cake as #1, but joe frazier has to be way up there too. And if you are going to talk about best left hook to the head, then Bob Foster IMO is head and shoulders above the rest as top dog. I think Foster probably had the best overall left hook ever.

Frazier had a good left hook to the body, but mind you Frazier had a good left hook to anywhere. However I have to go with the consensus and lob a vote Chavez's way.

definitely true about frazier. i also vote for chavez as #1

Hearns had a wicked left to the body when he used it, barrera and tito were also wicked with that left hook to the body
