Guteridge wrote in his introduction the following.
"I selcted them because I found them the most entertaining and interesting, because I enjoyed watching them in action either "live" or on film."
I didn't want to turn it into an endless ranking type thread. It's more about the fighters you liked and followed and admired for whatever reason.

Leonard
Salvador Sanchez

9 is not enough man!
Narrowring the list down to 9 is certainly very difficult. There have been alot of great and really good fighters over the last 35 years. I was born in 75, so my list would probably leave out figthers who were in their primes prior to 1985, as that is around the time I really started to be interested in boxing. Sorry to change the criteria but I never saw Sal Sanchez, or prime Duran, Spinks, etc aside from youtube clips. Keeping in mind the goal would be to sell books, I would try to find fighters that were not only great fighters, but also had a big impact on boxing not only because their skills, but also due to their popularity, charisma or personality. My list would be as follows.
JC Chavez
Roy Jones jr.
Bernard Hopkins
Oscar de la Hoya
Marvin Hagler
Ray Leonard
Evander Holyfield
Mike Tyson
Felix Savon
Felix Savon was an amateur beating up on bums and kids...heck...he retired at 33...as an amateur.
Not one pro fight.
Seriously...this is the cream of the crop of his opposition:Olympic Games 1992
1996
- Defeated Krzysztof Rojek (Poland) RSC 2
- Defeated Bert Teuchert (Germany) 11-2
- Defeated Danell Nicholson (United States) 13-11
- Defeated Arnold Vanderlyde (Netherlands) 23-3
- Defeated David Izonritei (Nigeria) 14-1
2000
- Defeated Andrei Kurnyavka (Kyrgyzstan) 9-3
- Defeated Kwamena Turkson (Sweden) RSC 1
- Defeated Georgi Kandelaki (Georgia) 20-4
- Defeated Luan Krasniqi (Germany) walkover
- Defeated David Defiagbon (Canada) 20-2
Pan American Games 1987
- Defeated Ojemaye Rasmus (Nigeria) 18-3
- Defeated Michael Bennett (United States) 23-8
- Defeated Sebastian Köber (Germany) 19-8
- Defeated Sultan Ibragimov (Russia) 21-13
1991
- Defeated Julio Sanchez (Puerto Rico) RSC 1
- Defeated Michael Bentt (United States) 5:0
- Defeated Juan Antonio Díaz (Argentina) KO 2
1995
- Defeated Tom Glesby (Canada) AB 1
- Defeated Shannon Briggs (United States) RSC 1
- Defeated Angus Lewis (US Virgin Islands) KO 1
- Defeated Santiago Palavecino (Argentina) RSCH 1
- Defeated Lamon Brewster (United States) AB 2
Besides, if you are going to list THE Cuban heavyweight amateur boxer...mention Teofilo Stevenson instead.
Yeah, it's nice to give some kudos to an amateur boxer...but seriously...Felix Savon don't belong here...

Up, up, and awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!
...especially not over someone like Lennox Lewis (who is not on Lemus' list).
Up, up, and awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!
It's about what would make a more interesting story, not who was a better pro. I'm a big fan of Lennox Lewis, but personality wise, he is a bit of a dud. I don't think he would make a better story than Felix Savon. Trying to dissect Savon's amateur career, analyzing his skill set and trying to determine how those skills would have translated as a pro would be much more interesting to read. Stevenson was in his prime pre 85, before my time viejito.![]()
Up, up, and awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!
