View Full Version : Best defensive fighters in history

1. Pep: Never saw him fight, but from what I've heard, he was a dancing, and feinting master with great reflexes who rarely got hit in his prime.
2. Whitaker: Best defensive fighter I've SEEN. Great reflexes, and headmovement. Also very effective at blocking and parrying.
3. Benitez: Best reflexes I ever saw. His ability to see punches coming was phenomonal. But once he lost his reflexes, he was screwed cuz his chin sucked.
4. Lil Floyd: Maybe a bit too early to make the list, but Floyd IMO belongs. His defense with his reflexes, footwork, and shoulder roll is masterful.
5. Duran: Had the best offensive defense in history. In other words, he could make you miss whilst on the attack. Napoles, and a prime Tyson were also very good at this, but not quiet like Duran.
Others?

I've seen both Pep and Whittaker and I was more impressed with Whittaker to be honest. Heck, I'm even more impressed with Mayweather. I still have to give Pep his props though. He was an all-time great.

seriously though, whittaker was prob the best i've seen off the top of my head. lopez's ability to slip punches is also extrodinary.
floyd yeah, i guess it's pretty tight. i wanna see him against an accurate banger that puts pressure on him and then i'll see.

by all accounts, Loche should probably be in the top 5. i like floyd to be top ten too, maybe too early for me to rank him top 5.
toney and Canto and Jones deserve to be mentioned, but they are not in the top 5. good list X

James Toney deserves a mention...He'll stand right infront of a guy for 12 rounds and at the end there wont be a single mark on his face. Alot of the 'close fights' hes involved in are nothing of the sort cause the other guys landing next to nothing.
Pernel Whitiker is the other obvious guy who springs to mind.

Most of the main ones have been mentioned.
some other defensive fighters i like:
Jack Johnson
Ayub Kalule
Marlon Starling
Michael Nunn
Ken Buchanan
Herol Graham
Sumbu Kalambay
No doubt the slickest of them all was Tex Cobb though.

With as many Texicans as there are on this site, I should have seen Miguel Canto's name by now.
And I prefer the term "pure boxer"

Toney doesn?t deserve to be mention, because he was/is very good defensively against JOURNEYMEN, SLOW-ASS fighters, and BUMS.
Now, in my opinion the best PURE BOXERS were (in not particular order)
Benitez, Whitaker, Pep, Canto, and recently Tapia are the five fighters that get my vote.

Let?s put it in perspective?Benitez (even out of shape and with two or so days of TRAINING) was able to make Sugar Ray Leonard MISS! Same goes with Canto, Whitaker, and even Tapia. Those guys were making FASTER fighters miss. And in occasions, they did it, even when they were in the losing end. That?s an example of a PURE BOXER.
Toney couldn?t do that shit against fighters like RJJ or even Griffin.
Toney is extremely overrated.

Mark Too Sharp is another that should consider too.
