I'm torn in this matchup. Originally I was liking Pavlik to stop him late, but now I think I might be picking Martinez by UD. I think he just plain might be too damn fast for Kelly. Plus I think Martinez is still hungry to win a big fight, whereas its possible Pavlik's hunger to win has diminished.

That's how I'm feeling right now. I think Martinez's speed may be too much for Pavlik. Of course, Pavlik just needs to land one good shot, but will he be able to?

It's an easy UD for Martinez, it's actually a mismatch here. I don't expect Pavlik to win a round.

The closer this fight draws near, the more I believe Martinez is going to shine. His speed is going to cause a ton of problems for Pavlik.

Agreed. I'm officially picking Martinez by UD. I just think Kelly will be clueless as to how to handle a fast southpaw.

I'm leaning towards Martinez via late stoppage.

It wouldnt surprise me, but a UD is a safer pick. I expect to see Pavlik hurt though, or maybe down. The way Kelly squares up, and keeps his gloves its gonna be pretty easy for Martinez to find him with the straight left. Kelly will have trouble seeing it coming.

As I mentioned in another thread, I will play for fun. Give me my 5k to put on Kessler.
As for Pavlik-Martinez, it's a brutally hard pick. Pavlik will bring it for 12 rounds even though Martinez is more talented. I don't know if Martinez can take the pressure for 12 rounds.

Do you think martinez won the Williams fight? I think Williams brought more pressure than Pavlik will bring and I had Sergio up by a round and that was being VERY generous to Williams.

No, I thought Williams beat him 115-113. The truth is Martinez has lulls in certain rounds. Pavlik hits a LOT harder than Williams. Those mid round lulls could really hurt him in this fight.

I've seen Kelly a number of times and I'll be there Saturday as always in AC and to tell the truth...I knew the Executioner had a shot cause he always brings it all to a fight, but Kelly is very strong and his crowd always flies down to AC and roots him on and motivates him away from home...I can see him win by knockout. Very strong tough fighter . Ringo

Pavlik should catch up to Martinez at some point in the fight.

I think Pavlik will win. A loss to Hopkins this early in his career is not defining. I'm sure he learned a lot from it. I think Martinez may be overrated from his fight with Williams.

Sergio Martinez by TKO9

Just as I suspected. Martinez was much too fast and talented for the one-dimensional puncher.

Only you picked him by stoppage. I got it right calling the UD!
All and all it went as expected. Martinez schooled him easily early, then lapsed in the mid rounds as he always does, then caught his 2nd wind in the 9th and beat the shit outta Kelly from then on.
BTW - I dont think you can even call Pavlik a "puncher". His power is overrated. He's heavy handed, but he's not the one punch KO type of guy he's been hyped to be over the years. Abraham is a bigger pure puncher then Pav.
Pav is a good fighter, but he only got to rule middle cause of bismal the division is. In another era he woulda never gotten a sniff.
I mean for Christ sake, can you imagie what a prime Hopkins, Jones, or Toney woulda done to Kelly?

Exactly.
Pavliks faults are all too plain to see and they were all to plain to see from Day 1.
People buy into the big puncher and tend to glamorize him to the extreme. This happens in all weight divisions and we are all prone to it I think.
In saying that, he is a decent fighter. When he can work behind the jab and get the punches off, he is hard to beat. He has got great punching technique with the right hand, nice leverage and extension. It's a pleasure to see when done right (e.g Gary Lockett).
I think a good trainer would have spotted these deficiencies in his fighter and tried to work on them. Pavlik has shown very little improvement throughout the years. I think his trainer really is dreadful. Shame he doesn't leave him. I wonder if he had worked on bending his knees, his speed, his movement, broadening his punch variety etc, would he have improved and been able to be competitive with Hopkins or even beat Martinez? Hard to say.
As for the future, we have to say he is theoretically done. I mean, he can come back vs the Duddy/chavez winner and probably beat them but his confidence is shot to shit now and when the going starts getting tough in future, I think the bitch in him will come out.
He will become the new Cintron.

He has shown great power when he can actually touch an opponent regularly. Therefore, I don't believe his power is overrated. He's just a plodder who has trouble getting set against versatile fast-handed fighters. He shouldn't feel too bad. Martinez is a bad man.

His power is overrated cause some ppl act as if he's a one punch KO artist, or like he has devestating power.
DEVESTATING punchers at middle are Hearns, Jackson, G-man, Nigel Benn, Roy. Those guys at 160 could legitmately end fights with one punch. Pavlik generally relies on accumulation.
